TECHNO

From Detroit’s roots to Berlin’s underground

Industrial grooves, relentless 4×4 at 135 BPM

Origins & Evolution

Born in mid-1980s Detroit, techno fused the mechanical throb of Kraftwerk with the funk of Motown and the futurism of local radio DJ The Electrifying Mojo. Early pioneers Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson—“the Belleville Three”—pressed relentless 4×4 rhythms on inexpensive drum machines, envisioning music for tomorrow’s factories and dancefloors. As the sound migrated to late-’80s Europe, Berlin and Frankfurt injected darker, industrial textures, setting the stage for today’s global, genre-splicing techno ecosystem.

  • 1988 — “Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit” compilation lands in UK record shops and coins the genre’s name worldwide.
  • 1991 — Tresor club opens in a former East-Berlin vault, becoming techno’s European nerve-centre.
  • 1999 — Berlin’s Love Parade peaks at 1.5 million ravers, proving techno can fill an entire capital city.
  • Today — A new wave of fast, industrial and hypnotic techno—spearheaded by DJs like Charlotte de Witte, Sara Landry and Amelie Lens—tops festival line-ups from Coachella to Tomorrowland.
